This past weekend NMSU Cycling racers, Scott Powers and Marcel Berger headed westwards to officially kick off the collegiate road race season 2018. Both racers participated in the 4th Santa Catalina road race and criterium.
Scott participated in his first road event ever and was accordingly excited. In his category, he needed to cover a distance of 27 miles on an out-and-back course with a 10 miles climb to the finish. Scott concluded his first road race in the top ten with an impressive 9th place. Sunday morning, Scott could top his result from the previous day by finishing 6th in a hard fought criterium, mainly animated by the big universities UoA & ASU.
For Marcel it was the 3rd consecutive participation in the Santa Catalina event. The road race was similar to Scott’s course except the additional rollers at the Veterans Memorial Blvd, which made the race 66 miles long this year. Marcel finished 3rd in his category. At the Sunday morning criterium, Marcel could improve his result from the previous day as well and finished 2nd in the race.
The NMSU Cycling Club congratulates both racers and looks forward to the upcoming events. Way to go, Aggies!!!
