The NMSU Cycling Club raced in the 505 Cycling Classic in Albuquerque, NM April 7–8, 2018. Members Scott Powers and Gordon MacDonald flew the crimson and white. The 505 Classic offers team and individual time trials, a criterium race, and a road race.
Scott and Gordon raced together in their first ever team time trial and took 1st place, finishing 1:20 ahead of the next team.
The criterium race was held at the Albuquerque Speedway, which features banked turns, descents, and climbs. By the time the Collegiate C race began, the wind was out of the west in the direction of the steepest climb of the course. Scott and Gordon held on at the front of the pack and finished 3rd and 2nd, respectively.
In true Southwest style, the road race took place on a day with breezy 20 mph westerly winds. The couse features an average 13% climb over Heartbreak Hill followed by a long fast descent into the Galisteo Basin. Scott and Gordon led a pack of eight riders in a paceline into the wind while traversing the Galisteo Basin. Scott finished 3rd, and Gordon finished 2nd in the collegiate event.
Congratulations and way to go Aggies!!!
